The office of the Town Clerk handles many of the day-to-day administrative needs of the town

and involves a variety of different duties and responsibilities:


The town clerk issues various licenses and permits, including dog licenses and handicapped

parking permit tags, and maintains reservations for Norton Park rentals. The office also issues

and records vital records including marriage licenses, birth and death certificates, and burial

permits.


In Columbus, the Town Clerk is also the Tax Collector, and is responsible for mailing out and

collecting the tax bills for local and county taxes, and making the necessary payments and

reports to the supervisor and the county.


The town clerk reviews all claims being presented to the town for payment, and prepares

Vouchers and Abstracts which are presented at each Town Board meeting for audit and approval

by the town board members .


The town clerk must attend all meetings of the town board and keep a complete and accurate

record of the proceedings of each meeting.


The town clerk is designated as the town records management officer and is the official

custodian of all the records, books and papers of the town; registers and maintains

records of all Local Laws; and provides public notices on behalf of the town.
